These U.S. DOS websites provide valuable information for U.S. citizens applying for a U.S. passport, and also provides details on what to do before you go, in addition to country-specific information, travel details, etc.  Immigration preparations
  • Apply or Renew your U.S. Passport. The expiration date should be more than six months after the end of your travels.
  • Apply for a visa, if required.  Information is available at the embassy or consulate of your destination country, or with your program provider.
  • Make two copies of all important documents. Leave one copy at home and pack the second copy separate from originals.
  • If you are an international student in the United States, contact the Center for International Education to learn about specific procedures to return to the U.S. and maintain your SEVIS record.  If you need a visa to return to the U.S., make sure yours will be valid when you return.
